East African Bloc to Convene Emergency Talks on Ebola Outbreak

(MENAFN) Health ministers from member states of the East African Community (EAC) are set to hold an extraordinary virtual meeting from June 1 to 2 as regional authorities intensify efforts to address the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting parts of East Africa.

According to reports, the emergency session will focus on coordinating a collective response and developing measures to contain the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a rare variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine or targeted treatment.

The meeting comes amid growing concern following reported outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. Regional officials are seeking to strengthen cooperation and improve preparedness as health authorities monitor the evolving situation.

According to reports, the outbreak remains concentrated in eastern DRC, particularly in Ituri Province, an area characterized by significant population movement, raising fears that the virus could spread across borders.

EAC Secretary General Stephen Mbundi said the regional bloc is enhancing preparedness efforts through joint surveillance systems, expanded laboratory testing capacity, infection-control measures, and public awareness campaigns.

"We are working closely with member states, Africa CDC and the WHO to prevent cross-border transmission and protect public health," Mbundi said.

According to reports, the upcoming ministerial meeting forms part of broader regional initiatives aimed at limiting the outbreak and strengthening coordination among East African countries.
